A downloadable Lost In A Dreamension

Hello!

This is a track I made for the OST Composing Jam. The theme "Inside My World" (and the artwork provided with it) instantly made me think of dreams, since I think that dreams are some of the most personal things created by our brain, meaning that noone  knows what someone else's dream could be like (so it's quite literally our "own worlds" in a way). I wanted to illustrate the feelings of dreams through this song by using some pleasing chords (can't go wrong with major 7th chords), but that are not necessarily in the same key (dreams are nice but you can feel that there's something strange going on). I also used some time signature and tempo changes to represent those moments where you feel like things are suddenly going at a different pace, for instance when the scenery is changing in a snap. The part with the organ and the marching snare reflect the occasional stress you can feel when you think something bad or awkward is actually happening (and it was just a dream but you were not aware of it).

I did not forget about the videogame part. When I was looking for ideas, I imagined a weird looking level of some RPG where the hero/heroine would be sent somehow in a dimension where everything happens like in a dream... except it's actually a real world. So I thought I could make a theme for  some kind of village where things constantly change and sometimes don't make sense. But the villagers are alright with it, because that's how they've been living for centuries, it's their world that's completely different from our world. So the main character has to deal with it and find a way to get out of this place. And I tried to make this into a theme just like I explained above.

It took me about 10 hours to finish this track (maybe a little bit more actually), I started when the theme was announced. I grabbed my guitar and played around with it to find the harmony and a melody, and then I did me best to trancribe it all on my computer in MIDI. The hardest part for me is to orchestrate what I wrote, to find what type of sound I want so that it fits with the mood I'm looking for.  And finally the mixing, which was also the hardest part because I lack of knowledge with it.

I use Cubase LE Elements 11, and I mainly used VSTs such as the BBC Symphony Orchestra by Spitfire Audio, Analog Lab V by Arturia, Groove Agent by Steinberg, and Monster Ethnica by Argus Hardiman  for this track.

My main inspirations when it comes to composing are with no doubts the soundtracks of various Nintendo games (especially Pokémon, Animal Crossing, Kirby, the Mario & Luigi rpg games...).

I wish I could have done more tracks for this jam since it's a fun challenge, but unfortunately I won't be able to this week.

Any criticism toward my composition is welcome, so I can try to improve in the future!

(The picture I chose as the cover art is not really related to the music, but it was the closest thing I had for this (Night sky → sleep → dreams...).

Thank you for listening and reading this, I wish you a great day!
